| U.S. segregates violent Iraqi prisoners in crates |
[07 Aug 2008|12:29pm] |
From Barbara Starr CNN Pentagon Correspondent
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. military is segregating violent Iraqi prisoners in wooden crates that in some cases are not much bigger than the prisoners.
The military released photos of what it calls the "segregation boxes" used in Iraq.
Three grainy black-and-white photos show the rudimentary structures of wood and mesh. Some of the boxes are as small as 3 feet by 3 feet by 6 feet tall, according to military officials, although they did not release a picture of a box that size.
The average Iraqi male is 5 feet 9 inches tall, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Health. That leaves little room for a prisoner to move once put in the detention box.
The photos were made public after a blogger filed a Freedom of Information Act request in 2005.
The military said the boxes are humane and are checked every 15 minutes. It said detainees, who stand in the boxes, are isolated for no more than 12 hours at a time.
"Someone in a segregation box is actually observed more than those anywhere else," said Maj. Neal Fisher, a spokesman for Task Force 134, the Marine unit in charge of detainees. "Their care and custody does not change simply because they are in segregation."
A prisoner has never fallen ill or died because of being held in a segregation box, Fisher said.
Human rights advocates say little is known about how the military treats prisoners inside these boxes.
"There are concerns that they could be used in places where the detainees are enclosed in extremely hot conditions. It is important to know whether or not detainees are provided with food," said Jennifer Daskel of Human Rights Watch.
Prisoners get food and water during their time in the boxes, Fisher said.
Since the abuses at Abu Ghraib , the U.S. has improved conditions for the 20,000 prisoners there, the military said.
But life is tough behind the wire. Hundreds are still considered by the military to be al Qaeda loyalists.
The U.S. military has released about 10,000 Iraqi prisoners and said it hopes to release more. Recently, 20 foreign fighters were sent back to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the military said.
"We are able to capture threats to the Iraqi government and the population, detain them, rehabilitate them, and 99 times out of 100 release them," Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said.

| Classics with a twist? |
[07 Aug 2008|03:15pm] |
Yesterday, I bought some absolutely phenomenal homemade foccacia from the local farmer's market, and then promptly forgot to eat it. So for today's lunch, I decided to stuff it with mild cheddar and fry it up as foccacia French toast. Let me tell you guys, that was a good idea.
Anyway, it got me thinking: what are your favorite twists on classic 'everyday' dishes? Special ingredients, new techniques, making like the contestants on Top Chef... What's your favorite way to switch it up?

Zac, wearing a familiar looking shirt, heads for departures at Burbank Airport with (apparently) his brother and friends, according to the source. TBH, I do not see Dylan or any recognizable friends in these pictures, although that might be Rob Pinkston in the black hoodie... not sure.
( More of Zac recycling clothes )
I should mention, I admire him for not wearing something once and discarding it like most celebrities do for two reasons, one it is 'normal' person behavior and two it isn't wasteful.

| Substitutions? |
[07 Aug 2008|03:13pm] |
So I'm trying to make an effort to clean out the pantry and 'fridge, and I have a couple of questions...
I accidentally got a can of coconut cream instead of coconut milk, and as it's pre-sweetened I don't want to use it for curry. Could I sub the cream for regular milk in a cake recipe?
I've also heard of people subbing in applesauce for oil or eggs to give a cake moisture. I have some cinnamon applesauce that really needs to be used up, so how's the best way to go about this?
Finally, will this wackiness create a possibly good cake, or possibly terrible cake? I'm trying to figure out the cinnamon/applesauce/coconut flavor combination and I think it could totally work, but advice would be appreciated. So would just a plain white cake recipe for me to try all this tomfoolery with.
Thanks!

| Freeman Released From Hospital, In Good Spirits |
[07 Aug 2008|03:16pm] |
Morgan Freeman Feeling "Real Good" After Hospital Release

Morgan Freeman has been released from a Tennessee hospital – and says he is glad to be on the upswing.
"I left the hospital today just after 12 noon, Memphis time," Freeman said in a statement released by his rep to PEOPLE. "I'm doing very well. I feel real good. I just really, I thank the staff at 'Elvis Presley [Hospital]' and many, many thanks to my many well-wishers. It's great to know people care about you.”
Kathy Stringer at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis confirmed on Thursday that the Oscar winner has been released.
Freeman, 71, was driving in Mississippi's Tallahatchie County late Sunday when the accident occurred and his car flipped over. Extracted from the wreck by emergency crews using the jaws of life, the Dark Knight actor was said to be "in good spirits" Monday after being airlifted to the medical facility.
Also on Thursday, Freeman's lawyer confirmed that the actor and his wife since 1984, Myrna Colley-Lee, were divorcing.
Freeman will have to wear a neck brace for six to eight months, according to attorney Bill Luckett, who added: "The doctors have said it will be six months to a year before he plays golf again. He hates that."

Gossip Girl Gets Vandalized Earlier this week Gossip Girl's new ad campaign was revealed, just begging to be reworked by the infamous subway ad artist (or anyone with scissors and a distaste for teen dramedies). It didn't take long, as a reader sent us the above photo, from the 23rd Street C and E station, taken this morning.

| Jay-Z raps a love song to Wrinkly |

Jay-Z raps about Oasis' Noel Gallagher Glastonbury spatRead what the rapper had to say about the guitarist

Jay-Z has rapped about Oasis' Noel Gallagher live on stage - dissing the guitarist and mocking his hit, 'Wonderwall'. The rapper delivered the lines during a show at New York's Madison Square Garden last night (August 6). During the show Jay-Z rapped: "That bloke from Oasis said I couldn't play guitar/Somebody should have told him I'm a fuckin' rock star". He then reprised a line from Oasis' 1995 hit 'Wonderwall', rapping, "Today is gonna be the day that I'm gonna throw it back to you". You can watch Jay-Z's Gallager-baiting rap by clicking on the video below. A public spat has blown up between the pair since Noel Gallagher said Jay-Z was \"wrong\" for Glastonbury earlier this year. Jay-Z then opened his headline slot on June 28 this year with a cover of 'Wonderwall'. However speaking in this week's issue of NME, out now, Gallagher played down any feud. "I wasn't saying I was better than Jay-Z as a person or rock was greater than hip-hop," he said. "I said what I said, and it was wrong, or it was taken wrong, and now all this [media furore]." Gallagher also claimed that Jay-Z liked 'Wonderwall', despite his mock version, and claimed 'Wonderwall' is always the last song of the night at the star's restaurant in New York. Gallagher added: "I'll have a beer with him one day and it will be fine."

| Princes William and Harry to attend Bond Premiere |
[07 Aug 2008|11:45am] |
Princes William and Harry will attend the world premiere of the next James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, in London, producers have said.
The event will raise funds for two military charities chosen by the British royals. Details of the event were announced Tuesday.
The film, starring Daniel Craig as the suave British spy, is the 22nd installment in the Bond series, and the second to feature Craig in the role of 007.
The premiere is scheduled for Oct. 29 in central London, and the film will be released around the world beginning Oct. 31.
Quantum producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, said, "We are pleased this event will help raise much needed funds to support the servicemen of our country through the princes' chosen charities."
Since its launch last October, Help for Heroes has raised £6m ($12M) for wounded servicemen and women.
The Royal British Legion provides support for those who are currently serving, or have served, in the Armed Forces and their families.
Quantum of Solace takes its title from a short story published by Bond creator Ian Fleming in 1960. Source

| Sally Kern: A Judeo-Christian Warrior With A Loaded Gun |
[07 Aug 2008|02:31pm] |
Sally Kern spoke at the Cleveland County Republican Club on Tuesday and reiterated her stance against homosexuality and same-sex marriage, Tulsa World reports. She also told them she's a Christian warrior: "I expected to run and lose, and then be a better government teacher, but I won. My Lord made it very clear to me that I'm a cultural warrior for Judeo-Christian values...I am not saying everyone has to be Christian; this is not a homogenous nation. What you have to be is someone who believes in a Judeo-Christian ethic, in other words, in knowing there's a right and wrong. Not all lifestyles are equal; not all religions are equal. Was I saying all people are not equal? Heavens no; we were all created equal." Kern "walked to the lectern on crutches and said she's dealing with bulging disks and an irritated sciatic nerve." Carrying a heavy gun and a load of hatred can do that to a person. Source If you don't remember Miss Sally...
